I know what you mean about feeling like you're running out of time. Until a month ago I was a university lecturer and I need to keep reminding myself that this year I don't have to prepare for a new semester!! But I also like to reframe it and (not being a lover of the heat of summer anyway) I'm really looking forward to the Autumnal chill in the air and the nights drawing in :)
Although I always looked forward to returning to school and September (maybe also because it’s my birth month) this whole summer has felt out of sync - going by too fast and yet extending endlessly in a list of have tos not want tos…so this year it does feel like running out of time, and I too have the motivation of a melted popsicle! Hoping for the magic of September to kick in overnight. I’m going to use my new fountain pen and crack open a brand new notebook to call forth cooler weather, focus and the anticipation I usually feel this time of year!
Ooo, a birthday in September is a great thing to look forward to! Do you have celebration plans for this year?
I know what you mean about having a lot of ‘have tos’ and not enough ‘want tos.’ That’s been my summer, too!
I love that you’re cracking out a new fountain pen and notebook! I LOVE a fountain pen. I need to find mine (I recently moved and can’t find anything!) xxx
He was originally my girlfriend’s dog, but we’ve been together for six years, so I think it’s fair to say he’s mine too. My girlfriend is Polish, and our dog has a Polish name: Fredzio. I know it’s not the easiest to pronounce if you’re not Polish.
Aw, I’m so sorry, Rosario. I definitely think he is yours now, too, after 6 years. Sending you and Fredzio a lot of love and cuddles and extra treats xx
I love your reflections. And yes, I do feel like I'm running out of time! August is such a spacious month and I feel as if it's the perfect time to get ahead and did I? No!
In fact, the space, and taking time for myself by the sea filled me with inspiration, and now a new series for Substack that's been born, which just added to my giant to-do list! But it's all good stuff, so instead of getting ahead I'll get back into a routine for it to all flow through, hopefully. Starting September feeling behind as always...!
Your story made me feel nostalgic and philosophical and, oh what a ride.
As our souls yearn for purpose, and our hearts strain for meaning, we, in most cases, forget that to find answers to such hard questions, we must live our lives, authentic.
There can be, no other route to fulfillment, to contentment.
Time does run out, yeah, but if we live, truly live, so what?
I completely relate to this. As a teacher whose schedule has given me time to write and live, I started dreading the resumption. But I’m working through going back to my routine with a better frame.
Yes, I feel that more than ever this year. I gave birth to my daughter this May and I can’t believe her first summer is already almost over. How is she 3 months old? How is she this big already when she was so little? Time is honestly running at light speed right now and I can’t seem to hold on to it all.
Oh, Katharina! I feel every word of this. I don’t have the privilege of being a Mum, but I’m a very proud Auntie, and I can’t believe how quickly my nephews grow! Every time I factime them, they seem to be like different humans! Children really are the perfect example of how quickly time passes 🥺
That's a GREAT mantra, Robin! Funnily enough, the journal I use sets me a ‘task’ for every week, and this week’s task was to write my own mantra. I think you just did the work for me!! 😉
I’m a single mom and homeschooling my nonspeaking 14 year old daughter, who uses spelling to communicate. I totally feel this today! My son goes back to public school(does NOT want to be homeschooled, hates school but loves his friends). And I’m starting a tutoring gig in the afternoon. Since I’m the only one that pays my bills! Tuesday is coming soon but I’m living in the present or at least trying!

I am SO looking forward to Autumn, Suzanne. Though it does stay hot in LA in September 😬 Like you, I’m not a lover of the heat lol
It’s hard to break that school routine when you’re so used to it!

I do feel like I'm running out of time. Especially since my little dog got lung cancer. It's been a really long month :(
I love the pictures you shared. They made me smile ❤️
I am so sorry, Rosario. That is heartbreaking. What is your dog’s name?
I’m glad the photos made you smile 🧡 xxx

Thank you so much Emma, I gave him one more from you. He truly appreciated that! ❤️
🧡
I always feel restless around this time of year. So I make to-do lists, finish ongoing projects, and watch Harry Potter for comfort.
Happy Sunday, Emma❣️
Restless is the perfect word for it! I need to write some to-do lists too, I think! Harry Potter is always perfect for comfort 🥲
Happy Sunday, my friend! xxx

Thank you, Kate! I’m glad I’m not alone 🥲 I didn’t get ahead either!!
I love that you took time for yourself by the sea! Where did you go?
Ooo, I’m excited to hear more about your new Substack idea!! Sending you love xx
Emma.

Yes, Jethro! Really, the answer to so many things is to live our lives! That’s how we seek out answers and even ask new questions 😀
Absolutely
Quick suggestion: if you’re not already familiar with artist and writer Suleika Jaouad, you’re in for a soulful treat and heaps of inspiration…💕
Yes, I love her!! I actually just bought her newest book to read 🥲
Oh yay! I got hooked on her writing with her Life, Interrupted column in the NYT many moons ago, she’s been an awe-inspiring influence ever since.
She is so inspiring and a gorgeous writer!

I love that Tobi! It’s such a balancing act! And SO hard to get anything done in term time!
Thank you
That feeling of running out of time—very familiar with that 💕
I’m so glad I’m not alone!! Thank you, Priya 🧡

I know what you are talking about! I feel the same whenever I see my nieces. Time just passes so quickly with children.
It really does 🥲
That writing room is something else! I visited Jane Austen's a few years back and it was so overwhelming I ended up in tears!
It was SO amazing. I would absolutely LOVE to see Jane Austen’s writing room! I’m not surprised you cried!
I have a mantra...I have all the time I need
That's a GREAT mantra, Robin! Funnily enough, the journal I use sets me a ‘task’ for every week, and this week’s task was to write my own mantra. I think you just did the work for me!! 😉
you’re welcome. it’s a rephrase of an american indian concept

Wow, Emily! It sounds like you have a lot on your plate! I hope you enjoy every moment of your summer before Tuesday rolls around 🧡
‘August’ feelings 💕
Yes, so many August feelings 🤣🧡
